131 : White-Cheeked Barbet

White-Cheeked Barbet - Megalaima viridis

I love a good Barbet ! These birds are endemic to the Western Ghat hills in South-Western India and the hills of Tamil Nadu. Those big bills are for eating fruit and cracking fruit stones and seeds. This is a much bigger bird than either a Crimson-fronted or Coppersmith Barbet which are the two Barbet species we have covered on the site so far. These birds had a very deep call - something from the Bassoon end of the woodwind family ! More Bitttern than Blackbird. These were fairly common where there were trees and hills.

I have already posted up a dozen species since I got back a week ago - it really was a great two days with birds I had never seen before turning up every 20 minutes or so. There are just so many more birds to see ! 25 April 2012 will be up there with perhaps one other day in April 2011 when the life ticks just rolled in. Birdageddon days.
