Little Bee-eater - Merops pusillus
After half an hour writing up Marabou Stork I thought I deserved something a little more charming. Africa's smallest Bee-eater, the Little Bee-eater. These were omnipresent as we travelled around the National Parks this Summer.
Like all Bee-eaters they nest in short tunnels dug into banks. They have even taken to nesting in the sides of golf bunkers at resorts. Unlike most Bee-eaters they will make a solitary hole rather than nest communally for protection from predators foraging for eggs.
Caught in the sun at either end of the day they shine perfectly. Busy little jewels chattering away.
